Entry Nine: For Fear of Falling

My next first kiss, my Mr. Big first kiss, changed my life. I thought I knew love, I thought I knew tingles and butterflies, sacrifice and pain. I thought I knew a lot of things. I didn't know anything. I discovered fighting and screaming meant something. I discovered an unwavering love of being the big spoon and sharing a leg pillow. I became a professional synchronizing sleeper. I learned how to cook and how much I love cooking dinner for my man, that's right, my man. I became a cleaning expert, including the ability to dust a drum set without making a sound. I know the adorableness that is sitting on a boy's lap while he plays the drums and kisses my neck. Nothing has ever made me smile the way picking up a gallon of milk for the two of us made me feel. Our things. Our yard. Our cat. I like speaking in plurals. I like reading the same book and talking about it, watching a tv series together. Having potlucks with our couple friends, backyard barbecues and drives through the mountains with the windows down and a fresh bag of dried mangoes.

Our date night was a monthly trip to Floyd County. We'd go to the art gallery and thrift stores, buy pearl handled pocket knives and groceries from all the local markets. We had lunch at a little restaurant called Odd Fellows where we split chimechangas and drank tea out of mason jars. We'd stop at the fabric store and buy fabric for curtains we'd never make and pillows for the couch. On the way home we'd take the Blue Ridge Parkway and sit on the grass and watch the clouds go by. I've never loved silence more than when he was with me. When he'd fall asleep on the drive home, holding my hand and squeezing it every once in a while to pretend he was awake. I knew he wasn't and i didn't care. My arm went to sleep more than once because I didn't want to take it out of his.

Then there's the other side. The side where I laid in my bed and cried for weeks. The side where he thought he could have every girl in the world, Bahamas, Colorado, Thailand, Virginia, North Caroline, and still have me, waiting there, when he was tired with whichever girl he thought was "the one" that time. The side of him who lied to my face without flinching, promised me the world, promised me perfection and honesty, then slept with my best friend.

Or should I focus on the good side? The one that went on adventures with me every night, the one who gave me confidence and pride, the guy who made all my problems go away simply by kissing my nose and calling my beautiful. The one who proposed to me so sweetly, innocently, spontaneously, truthfully. Perfectly. The guy who taught me what it feels like to have a best friend. My first best friend. I still remember the day he told me I was his best friend. I remember what I was wearing, where we were laying, the look on his face when he said "I finally understand what my parents were saying when they told me they were each other's best friends", what it felt like when his dad told him to marry me. The love of a family when we had dinner with his parents in our house, him and his dad playing chess in the living room while his mom and I drank wine and talked in the kitchen, the chili on the stove.

Or the pain when I found out he was sleeping with my best friend. Knowing all the things I was talking to her about were used against me, to get him, to use me to make him hate me, to choose her. The pictures of her in his kitchen. The pictures of her wearing his sweater, the sweater I used to wear. Her sleeping with him in our bed, the places I called my home forever changed, damaged. Having dinner with their friends. Kissing her, holding her hand. Her making my bed. Petting my cat. My Jimi. I wanted to shave him when she left. I wanted her off him. Off everything. Out of my life. I wanted to kill her. I wanted her to know the betrayal I knew, of telling your best friend about the boy you love to have her slide in when you were out of town and take everything you had worked years to build. Then, when it all hits the fan, having no one, no one, to talk to about how bad it hurts because it is your best friend who did it.

What about how he used to throw rocks at my window to get me to let him in at two am, drunk and tired of the girl he left me for. About how hard it was to turn away. About how I knew he was out there, wanting me, while I laid on my bed, tears streaming down my face, a pillow covered in black mascara. Or the night I let him in, he sat on my stairs, I walked past him to go get a sweater from my room. He grabbed my leg and pulled me back "I'm worried if you walk away you'll never come back. You can't never come back". Something he doesn't even remember saying, something I'll never forget, his clothes, his smell, his plea. My heart breaking. Thinking about the girl, thinking about me, thinking about his lips forgetting mine. Knowing that is the way it should be. Knowing that the strength I needed to push him away I did not posses.

What would you do?

We met through my roommate, who was trying to woo him, ignoring the fact that she was already seeing two people. The first time we really hung out it was with my roommate, him and his friend, Ryan. We went to the park to take pictures for photography class, which Mr. Big and I were both in. Turned out we both had the same camera. We spent the day walking though the park, taking pictures. When it came time to have lunch we went to Mr. Big's mom's ice cream parlor and got panini's. Which led to us going to his parent's house to take a dip in their hot tub. Of course, my roommate bailed on us to go to her first boyfriend's house. So, it was just Mr. Big, Ryan, and I, taking shots of Jim Beam and chasing them with Dr Pepper. When his friend got drunk and went to bed it was just the two of us left. He gave me his bed and was going to take the couch, but it was a king size bed so I told him he could share. So we brought the Jim Beam to bed and stayed up, not taking shots and talking. We laid down with the space of at least one person between us. Which slowly turning to half a person, a quarter of a person, no person, spooning. His arm wrapped around me, holding my hand, his face pushed into the back of my neck. "I don't remember the last time I just cuddled" is another one of those things he said which I will never forget. Another one of those instances which shows how well guys can say exactly what you want to hear. We never kissed, we never did anything.
Following that night we slept together for two weeks. Never kissing. Just watching Adult Swim and cuddling. In my dorm. in my twin bed. So close there was space on both side of us. We made a twin bed feel like a king. We didn't want space. We wanted close. We talked about family, how important our grandfathers were to us, the sight of him crying, reminiscing about their influences, the pain of their death.
The night of our first kiss was the same as every other night, my roommate spending every night at her boyfriend's house, giving us privacy. We were in my bed, watching tv and cuddling. It was extremely hot that night. The windows were open but made no difference. I had a glass of water. He was complaining, oh so adorably, about the heat. So I poured my water over him, nose to nipples. Which prompted him to grab me and flip me on the bed, making my uncontrollable laughter all the more intense. And he looked at me. And I looked at him, my cheeks burning from smiling so wide. And he kissed me. And I lost all feeling in every part of my body, my heart stopped, my ears rang. The world faded out to perfection. I felt nothing but his lips, his hands, his breath. His heartbeat. it was one of those moments when you know you've just had your last first kiss. The one that means more than breathing.

I was never a girl who believed in love. No soul mates or fate. The most I hoped for was good sex and someone who answered the phone when I called. He changed that. Everything about him changed that. I knew there was more. I knew I could have it. For the first time in my life I felt special.

Entry Eight, Guy Four: Mr Big

This next post is one I have thought long and hard about skipping. It was my most meaningful relationship. It changed who I was, who I could have been, and turned me into who I am now. More than anything has ever shaped my life, he did. Good, bad, worse, it happened and I can't skip it.

It's one of those relationships where you sit for hours and wonder if, going back, you would still do the same things, or would you just walk away. It's one of those questions I will never have the answer to.

What I am about to post is jumbled; it's a small stream of thoughts and memories. It barely touches the surface of what we were, what I thought we were anyway. It is a work in progress, the story of Mr Big. And, while in life he's gone, the story that was us is forever playing my head.

I still get a painful feeling, a gut-punching pain, when someone talks about him, when I think of him with someone other than me. A new big spoon at his back. Someone wiping tears away, cooking him dinner. Wearing his sweater. The sweater I made him buy.

I still have moleskines with our grocery lists, our cat's adoption papers, his shirt in my drawer. And, while I've been seeing other people, people who are better at holding my hand, buying me secret gifts, sending me mix tapes and not making my cry, there will always be a part of me who wonders what life would be like if he'd never asked me that question; if I hadn't froze; if I had jumped into that bath tub with him.

I used to keep my eyes open and watch his face while he kissed me. I still remember how he looked at me when he loved me. I remember the first time he said it, where we were, where we'd been, what I was wearing, the knowledge that he was going to say it, seeing it all day, so excited for it to come out.

I've had better sex, but I've never had a better kiss than his.

Entry Seven, Guy Three: Socks

White socks to be exact.

I met Socks when I was in the first grade. He was my brother's best friend. Two years older than me, 90 degrees hotter. He was my first crush. I baked cookies for him, played paintball to lay beside him in the dirt, followed my brother around for him.

It helped that our families were friends. We went on summer vacation together, to the amusement park almost every weekend, and to backward barbecues at each other's houses more often than we ate alone. Our parents would drink beer and talk while I pretended I was great at basketball to impress him, more often than not getting kicked off the game for being an annoying little sister.

Once I got into high school my crush became more sophisticated, more elegant. I would turn on MTV so when Real World came on it would lure him into my bedroom, where the two of us would stay up all night throwing a little plastic ball back and forth and talk about nothing. I would leave his favorite candy bar sitting on my desk so when he walked past my room he would see it and think it was my favorite, too. Truth was I hate it. But it was all I ate, leaning on the hope that he would one day see me eating it and know, as I knew, that we were meant to be together.

He must never have seen me eating it, because 12 years passed before he noticed me as a person and not his friend's little sister.

When I was accepted to a college near his things started to change. We hung out the summer before I left. He drove me around town in him Jeep Cherokee and bought me lunch at McDonald's. It was everything I ever dreamed and more. Never in my life, not before, not since, has a boy made me feel more filled with butterflies on crack. He was my ideal. He was my life long dream. He was Socks.

And he was mine.

Once college started we started. Now, instead of a little sister I was a girl with boobs and a smokin' ass. For the first couple of weeks it was magical. He was a cuter, older boy who went to a nice school, with parents who adored me. Hell, I rode my first roller coaster with him mom when I was in the third grade. The Avalanche. We knew everything about each other, except all the fun bits we were about to learn.

Our first kiss is more important to me than any kiss before. This was my real first kiss, the one that sent fireworks through my body and tingled in every inch of my being where tingles are fun to have.
It was a week night after class. He came over to watch a movie in my dorm room. My roommate was at her boyfriend's house so we had the room to ourselves. My TV was having issues so we watching Pulp Fiction on my tiny computer screen.

We did the nervous dance of sitting beside each other on the bed, then slowly making excuses and tiny movements to get close enough that our sides were touching. Before I knew what to do, I feel his fingers wrapped around mine and HOLY SHIT WE'RE HOLDING HANDS! Which, as you all know, is one of the best feelings in the world, a boy you like taking your hand and squeezing it and not letting go. And you sit there, and you pray, and you make a pact with a god you barely believe in to somehow make a bottle of crazy glue appear and magically drip itself between your intertwined fingers so this feeling will never go away. For that, my friend, a girl would sell her soul.

And we sat like this for a while, ever muscle in my body tense with my eyes trying to focus on the peripheral image of him without being insanely obvious. Then, every touch setting my body in flames, he cups my chin and turns my face to his. Get in my head right now and hear the exploding crescendo when his lips, those lips that i've known so well, those lips that I've memorized and kissed pillows in search of for years, those lips finally touch mine, squeeze into mine, open mine, and fireworks go off in the pit of my stomach and I could die. Right here. Right now. And there wouldn't have been a girl happier to die, knowing her last thought, sight, touch, smell, was him and only him. My dreams realized.

And we pull away, smile at each other, and finish the movie, not a word spoken, not a word needed.

That was our first kiss. Pure and simple, perfect.

intermission

you know how you can be completely over someone, even sleeping with a guy who looks like Mario Lopez who blows your mind each and every time you get naked, then you see one stupid little thing and your mind takes off and you feel that pressing, aching, deep down burning pain that you felt that first time he cheated on you?

and at first you're lost. Desperate. longing for a time in history where everything was simple, brilliant, on a boat with new friends and so many future times of happy.

What can you do?

Well, you can get off your pity party and call Mario.

World rocked.Mind blown.All better.

God damn, i sure am glad I have life all figured out.

Entry Six: ough, i'm still on him...

Ever fooled around in a WalMart parking lot before? Me too. And a parking garage at the mall, parking lot of my high school, and the floor of my almost finished new house. That's a good story. I'll share that one.

So, my parents being the great parents they are, told me my grandparents were uncomfortable with me having boys in my room. (There was a night Brandon came over and we made out and, you know, other stuff, on my bed while Donnie Darko played in the background. But, what we failed to notice was the movie never actually started; the first scene played over and over for about an hour. Just one song, on repeat, looking oh so not innocent.)

So, with my grandparents' concern and my parents' concern to not concern my grandparents, I was told to take my date to our new house. This house was located in the woods, down a long driveway, with no neighbors, parents, or grandparent. No anyone actually. That's right, high school you wishes it had my family.

So, we put a blanket down on the rough, unfinished floor and hook up the TV in the soon-to-be kitchen. We watch, make out to, cuddle through Team America: World Police. Magical. Especially the puppet sex scene.

I liked him. A lot.

Then it ended, as most things do. I don't remember how. I'm sure his ex had something to do with it. See, I wouldn't put out, no matter how many "you think that feels good? Sex feels so much better" talks I got.  Standards, ladies, get them and keep them.

I was hurt, of course, but Socks was standing by, in the wings, waiting for his shot at glory.

I'd like to say I let it go at that, I never saw him again. Serves him right...

But I don't lie. My mom never taught me and I never took the numerous lessons that my father offered me growing up.

My freshmen year of college, maybe six months after I left, or was left, by him.
I was having a bad week. Homesick I guess, classes too much maybe, roommate issues I'm sure.
I left school at 11 pm, got to his house at around 2 am. We laid on the couch at his parents (because he was still living at home, maybe thinking his little band would soon be big enough to take his 20-something ass big places. Moron. I hope you're still failing, by the way), made out a little. I was seeing someone at school. Not dating, just going on dates (yes, there is a difference) and seeing Brandon again made me realize how lucky I was to not be with him. His mom came down in the middle of the night because she heard the TV. She basically accused me of being an awful person because her son only ever chooses awful people. It was a great night. But I couldn't go to my parents. It was a Tuesday. I had class the next day. I shouldn't have been four hours away from school.

So, we went to a 24 hours diner down the road. I drove, he still didn't have a license. We had awkward food while I wished I were anywhere but there, with anyone but him. Finally, the sun was up and my house might possibly be empty. I dropped him off, with the intention of never, never, ever seeing him again, and drove to my parents' house to sleep for an hour or two before getting back to school and the classes that, lets face it, I was going to skip.

Of course, my father was home. So I told him I was homesick, that my classes had been cancelled that day, and all I wanted to do was sleep in my bed a few hours and be home.

We still fondly remember that day as the day Lauren just had to see her Daddy.
If my parents only knew...

Oh, and as for the kissing his friend part, I suppose I should tell that story as well. It's not as good as you hope...

There's an ice cream place that was all the rage in the town I grew up in. It was pretty much the only thing to do. So, after school everyone would migrate there. Brandon and I followed suit one day. I'm not sure if he text his friends that we were going there or if it was an actual coincidence, but there they were. His silly little band, screamo-emo crap, with their tight jeans and meaningless tattoos, all "we don't get stoned but we get ice cream" in my face.

So, Brandon was saying goodbye to one of his friends, his best friend I think. I still don't remember his name. Sorry.

Anyway, they kiss, on the lips. And his friend walks away after giving me this ridiculous rebel-without-a-cause grin. And I just ignored it all.

"I just wanted to see what you'd do." Really? You're a freaking moron. I told him I didn't care, that it didn't make a difference to me who he kissed, as long as he still kissed me. But the truth, my like for him severely dropped. Not because he kissed a boy, but because he did it to get a rise out of me. I mean, really? He was at least 20 at the time, behaving as if he were 15. You know what, boy, go skateboard into the sunset with you best guy pal. K?

Good lord I was an idiot. The amount of ignorant I was still appalls me. Yet, I've made bigger mistakes. Oh my lord bigger.

In total, this relationship lasted about three weeks, two weeks longer than the first. The next one will last about 7 months. His name is Socks, his nickname anyway, but you're smart enough to know that, aren't you...

Entry Five, Guy Two: Watch Me Kiss my Best Friend

Great opening line for two girls in a bar, right? Not so much for the guy you're seeing and his friend, Steve or John or Frank (I honestly have no clue what his name was).

So, to set the scene, senior year of high school. I was trolling the MySpace world for, I'll say it, sexy young boys. That's right, I had not given up after the first time. Ever resilient and optimistic, and a touch stupid. So, I come across a cute face and send it a message (PS I'm very charming over typing). My supreme charm wins me a date after school only a few days later (like I said, charming).

We meet at a grocery store (red flag #1). He's straight edge, because at that point it was still hip to call yourself straight edge when you didn't do anything that you weren't legally allowed to do anyway. Which was cool because I didn't do any of those things either. So we're standing by my car and... I'm trying desperately to remember what happens after this, but I swear this insignificant little prick has left few things of value in my head.

I drove, his license was suspended (red flag #2). But he was good looking and he said all of the right things (a trait I'm realizing a lot of guys posses in excess). I drove us to my grandparent's house, where I had been living while my parents were building our new house. No one was home yet so we hung out in the guest house where my parents were living. I wanted to show him the wonders of yerba matte, because everyone should experience it (seriously, go buy some, so good! Magical mint in my favorite. Much nicer than coffee breath, believe me). So, we were in the tiny kitchen in the house built for midgets  where my head almost hit the ceiling. And somehow the matte turned us on so much (it's been known to happen) that we're making out against the counter. And it was glorious! I had never kissed a boy I actually liked before! And let me tell you, it makes a huge difference!

And, of course, being so close to the matte, and still being so very much turned on by it, other things began to happen, each feeling as magical as the last.

Things I learned on that first date:
1) chapstick is not overrated
2) bras are silly
3) fingers are magic (take from that what you will)
4) first date feelings can never be trusted

Chapter Two: Shit.

So, I was so excited to tell my best friend, Felicia, all about this guy.

Things I learned from thinking friends can be trusted:
1) they can't.

Apparently, which I did not know, Brandon (real name, because he isn't good enough for a fake one) had been seeing a girl I went to school with, a girl Felicia was also friends with, a girl I had an acquaintance with. This, I did not know. So, my awesome BFF takes her side in a fight I didn't know existed. Now the whole school knows I hadn't kissed a boy until my senior year, that I was a virgin, and probably a few other things that I still don't know about. I've never really had good luck with friends.

Devastated.

Don't worry. I'll get to the boy kissing next time.

Entry Four: first kiss...

I feel like my last post should have been more magical. I mean, a first kiss should be a big deal. But for me it was just something to get rid of. I had been waiting for so long for someone to notice me and sweep me off my feet, but that's not the way things happen.

This isn't a fond memory for me. Not that it made me cry or kept me awake at night, just that it really didn't hold any meaning for me what so ever. He was just a boy, no more important that someone I would walk past in a grocery store. And I wish that weren't true, but it is.

I read SS's post again, and I really don't like it. But, I think it's because I have no connection to it, other than the fact that I was in it. I feel like I lived it by watching it, not by being in it.

Am i the only one out there who feels this way? Everyone's first kiss couldn't have been magical...

I guess it somewhat mattered to me; I can still smell his cologne, feel his slippery lips. I see the room with the floral couch and the tv in front of it. I see the awkward way we were sitting and how wrong it felt when he tried to hold my hand.

Just wrong, so, so wrong. Wouldn't it be nice if I could say I hadn't felt like that since? Ha!

Such is life,

Lauren
